Tirek is by far the most competent villain the show has ever seen.. While Discord is superior in his own time, he loses against Generation 1 Tirek by a long shot.
Television standards were far lower back in the 80's, you were allowed to get away with blatantly implying murder in your show for "little girls", and so they did... Tirek was bent on chopping Spike's head off if Scorpan Failed him, and no parental controls could stop that from happening.
Too bad politicians were hell bent on keeping children programming politically correct.. I still can't believe they implied that watching Dungeons and Dragons would turn you into a satanist, and had to put a public service announcement against turning to murder in Australia!!
It's sad that some people are stupid enough to think a little cartoon violence will turn those children into killers!
